PTSA Summer Scholarships Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do students have to attend an intensive, class or lesson based on the conservatory they are enrolled in at Booker T.?
A: No. We encourage students to attend an 'art-related' intensive, class or lesson regardless of the conservatory they are enrolled in at Booker. T. For example, a visual arts conservatory student can attend a music program.
Q: Will a screenshot of Power School be accepted as a transcript?
A: No. An official transcript from Booker T.'s Registrar's Office must be uploaded to your application. Click here to request an official transcript. You must pick up the paper transcript from the counselor's office, open the envelope, and either scan or take a photo to upload it to your application.
Q: Can I use the scholarship money to pay for travel expenses and/or supplies for the program?
A: No. The Summer Scholarship funds are allocated for the tuition of the intensive, class or lesson during the summertime only.
Q: What kind of academic class can I take over the summer to qualify for a summer scholarship?
A: The academic class must be a credited course that will be applied toward your graduation credits. Consult your Booker T. counselor for recommendations and course approval. A written approval from the Booker T. counselor must be submitted with your application.
Q: Where can I find information on summer intensives, classes or lessons?
A: Read the testimonials from Booker T. students on the Summer Scholarship page. Students share their experiences from attending various summer intensives, classes or lessons. Also, ask your conservatory teachers for recommendations.
Q: How soon should I start applying for summer intensives, classes or lessons?
A: If the intensive, class or lesson requires an audition, consider preparing for the audition and application process during the winter break. Summer programs typically begin taking auditions/applications during the Jan-March time frame. Others may stay open through May. Research, ask questions, and stay prepared.
Q: Do all summer intensives, classes or lessons require auditions?
A: It depends on the type of summer intensive, class or lesson you would like to attend. Typically, dance, music, and theatre programs require auditions.
Q: Do I need to submit an essay for the scholarship?
A: Yes. After completing your summer intensive, class or lesson, you must submit an 'Exit Survey Essay' detailing your experience in the program you attended. Students must submit their Exit Survey Essay to qualify for a scholarship in the years to follow.
Q: Can I use the scholarship money to pay for more than one summer intensive, class or lesson?
A: No. Students will receive up to $500 for one summer intensive, class or lesson.
Q: Can I apply for a PTSA Summer Scholarship every year as a student at Booker T.?
A: Enrolled 9, 10 and 11th-grade students may apply each year.
Q: Can seniors apply for summer scholarships?
A: No. We encourage seniors to apply for scholarships through their conservatory, guild, Advisory Board, colleges, etc.
Q: What if my intensive, class or lesson costs less or more than $500?
A: The PTSA will award up to $500 per student to attend one summer intensive, class or lesson. If the program is $250, the PTSA will award a $250 scholarship. If the program is $1,000, the PTSA will award a $500 scholarship.
