| Sprint to the Finish! Booker T. Washington talent was displayed in stellar fashion last week during the FLYINGHORSE show - a big congratulations to all participants and the Advisory Board! Be sure to check out photos from some of the amazing performances below. We have several upcoming volunteer and donation opportunities, including AP Testing support. Volunteers are needed May 4–15 for proctoring assistance and hallway monitoring. All sign‑up links are included below. Planning is also wrapping up for the cross‑conservatory production, Creations on May 1, that will close out an extraordinary season. We’re excited to showcase a display of past production posters and playbills in the MAT lobby, dating back to the show’s debut in 1977. Our scholar‑artists have been working hard, and we hope you’ll join us for this special performance. Volunteers are needed, and a concessions wishlist is available to help stock the stand, with proceeds benefiting the Class of 2029. I invite you to join us for the last PTSA general membership meeting this school year on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, in the commons when we will feature presentations from students who have benefitted from our student activity grants. Lastly, we hope that all students attending Prom this weekend have a safe, fun, and memorable time! Please be sure to capture fun pictures and send them our way to share in next week's newsletter. Get ready as we head toward the home stretch!
With gratitude, Leah |

FLYINGHORSE 2026 has officially completed her mission, and what a launch it was! 🚀👽👾 An enormous THANK YOU to the 275 students, cast, and crew who poured their hearts, talent, sweat, tears, and yes, even a little blood onto the MAT stage. Your artistry, grit, and imagination created a world that was bigger, bolder, and more brilliant than anything we could have dreamed. We could not be more proud. |
This year’s event also marked an extraordinary achievement in fundraising, led by the BTWHSPVA Advisory Board under the dedicated leadership of Executive Director Lisa Lawrence Walker: This production was powered by a galaxy of supporters who said yes and helped bring this cosmic vision to life. Deep gratitude to Tippy Balady and Michael Garcia for coming home and sharing space with us; our pro/tech team, resident mad scientist, supernova alums Presely Oldham and Simon Waranch, the tireless BTW faculty who stayed until midnight; our incredible house management team; facilities heroes like Dr. Barrett and Mr. Bell; our volunteer extraordinaires; Lighting Wizard Pavel (A+); lifesavers Steve Schrag and Phil Vilar; and the many more who lifted, carried, built, and believed. Thank you to Dr. Michael Jacko, W1 and 3, Kate Walker, Geno Young, Mark Quach, Marlee Fleisher, Joel D, Amarji King, and punk‑rock fairy godmother Ann Arkey. Immense appreciation to the Arts Magnet Advisory Board, the best board in Dallas, and to our dreamy event chairs Noel Pittman and Javier Burkle for elevating every detail. And to my three fierce, brilliant, selfless associates — Corstro Snider, TC Wards, and ANN — there is truly no team better. Period. Heart full. Grateful. FLYINGHORSE 2026 soared. |
FLYINGHORSE FEATURED ALUMNI |

| Tippy Balady | Class of 2019 Tippy Balady is a three minute storyteller. Whether it be a song about pirates, fairies, scuba diving, etc.,: no subject is off limits for this songwriter and no adventure is too outlandish. Tippy hails from Dallas, Texas, where she attended high school at Booker T. Washington School for the Performing Arts (Norah Jones, Erykah Badu and Edie Brickell), attributing her time spent with fellow incredibly individualistic and artistic classmates as well as professors like Nathan Myers to being key players in her becoming the artist she is today. Tippy is motivated by music’s innate ability to connect people both physically and emotionally together. She strives to create songs that function as a diary for the public eye, building worlds through instruments and capturing snapshots of her own life through verse and chorus. By incorporating bits of fantastical whimsy in her writing, intertwined with a deep earnestness throughout her songs, she provides an escapist yet grounding presence that can be listened to time and time again. Coming off from her first tour this past March, Tippy Balady will be graduating from University of Southern California this Spring with a BA in popular music and already has plans to drop her debut EP, “Taming of a Wendy Bird” in fall of 2024. |

| BTW ASP Senior Incentive Raffle | Support Needed This year, as part of our effort to encourage students to complete DISD college‑readiness milestones and graduation requirements, our senior ASP leaders have proposed a Senior Incentive Raffle. Students who complete the required tasks will be entered for a chance to win a selection of college‑themed prizes. We are hoping to offer three big‑ticket items (such as scooters or a mini‑fridge, typically priced around $70–$80) and three smaller college‑essentials (like shower caddies, extension cords, first‑aid kits, and a custom college T‑shirt donated by a family‑owned business). We would love to collaborate with our community to help fund or donate these raffle prizes, and we welcome any additional ideas you may have. Our goal is to announce the winners on May 8, so this is a quick turnaround — but we believe it will make a meaningful impact for our seniors. If you’re interested in contributing or partnering with us on this effort, please reach out to BTW ASP Advisors, Ms. Butler or Ms. Belmonte. |
